Artist Bio:
Jennifer Seymour is an artist, wife, mother, and high school visual arts teacher located in upstate NY. Being raised in a very Catholic family, Jennifer became increasingly interested in the idea of visual symbolism, storytelling, and the relationship of art to other academic areas. As a result, her artwork became a puzzle meant to be “figured out”, full of symbols and ideas, much like the stained glass windows in the Churches she grew up viewing.
After graduating with her BFA, Jennifer wanted to share the fact that the visual arts are relative to all areas of life, so she trained to be a teacher. She spends most of her days teaching highschool students that art is everywhere, they only need to look. One of her favorite aspects of her teaching position is to help her high school seniors build portfolios to apply to art schools.
Artist Statement:
My artwork is about connections. I use already established symbolism as a way to link imagery to concepts that intrigue me. Growing up in a long lineage of incredible women and academics has created a desire to show the strength of how interconnected everything is. Through the investigation of sacred symbolism, geometry, world cultures, the Sciences, and influential female artists (Kiki Smith, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Hilma af Klimt, to name a few), I’ve created imagery full of information just waiting to be experienced. My artwork reflects my continuous journey of exploring the world and translating my experiences into the visual arts.
